A throbbing sensation started in my head as the spinning began to subside. I had just had a concussion, and this definitely wouldn’t help. Of course, there were few things that a crowbar to the face helped with.

Swallowing hard, I looked up at Tori, blinking hard to try to clear my vision as I wondered whether this moron had cracked my skull. She looked down at me like some figment of my nightmares. A face from the past that I would have just as soon pretended never existed filled my line of sight. She grinned at me, the same sort of grin I came to despise when she was dating Yardley. I knew that look. It was meant to imply that she thought she had everything under control. She thought, as she always seemed to think, that every person in this situation was wrapped around her little finger. If I were being honest, she was usually right about that. Tori had a way of twisting men up into knots. She had a knack for getting them to do exactly what she wanted. I was a notable exception to that rule, and she’d always hated me for it.

“Same old Tori,” I said in a strained haze, still blinking hard. “Bad intentions and stupid men to bring them to life for you.”

“Same old Lucky,” she replied. “Never as smart as he thinks he is and always on his back.”

“Yeah. Well, staying upright isn’t as easy as you’d think, seeing as how your latest boyfriend put a piece of metal between my eyes,” I muttered.

“Roscoe isn’t my boyfriend. He’s my bodyguard,” she said. “And let him help you with that.”

With his hand that wasn’t holding the crowbar, Roscoe reached for me. Though her tone indicated the ‘beating the crap out of me’ part of this interaction was over, I wanted to let Tori know that coming into my home with violence on the mind wouldn’t be tolerated. More than that, I wanted her to know that though I was lying down, I wouldn’t go down this easily.

So, grabbing the man’s hand, I pulled hard. Raising my leg, I caught his chest and used that momentum to lift him off his feet and toss him over me. He grunted loudly as he hit the floor, his crowbar clanging against the hardwood as it fell. Now, I wasn’t the only one on my back.

I got to my feet a second or so before Roscoe did. It wasn’t long, but it was enough time for me to land a hard jab to his face. That sent him stumbling back, and I used that time to scoop up the crowbar. Swinging it, I hit him in the gut and then again in the back when he leaned forward.

Rosco fell again, this time on his stomach. As he groaned, I tossed the crowbar down. I was about to address Tori, and though she was awful, I didn’t want to come at a woman with a weapon in my hand.
